Porch Potty FAQ

Q: What do you do with the POOP?

Glad you asked. Before running water through the Porch Potty you should pick up any solid waste, as you do at the park. Some like to use bags, while others simply use toilet paper to then flush down your toilet. Its up to you.

Q: Which is better: Real Grass or Synthetic Grass?

If you have the means of watering the real grass (either by hose or with a watering can), we recommend at least starting out with real grass. The scent of real grass makes it easier to train dogs at first because they have a natural instinct to potty on natural grass. Synthetic grass works well too, however, it requires a little more training at first. In the long run, synthetic grass requires less maintenance, and therefore might be a good substitute for real grass once your dog gets into the habit of using the Porch Potty. All Porch Potties can use both real grass or synthetic grass.

Q: What is the Porch Potty made of? Wood or Plastic?

The Porch Potty is made of a sturdy metal frame and all-weather resin wicker. The tray is recycled plastic. The Porch Potty will not rot, mildew, absorb moisture, odors or bacteria.

Q: Why is Porch Potty better than any other potty box for dogs out there?

Price - Most of our customers choose this as the number one reason they buy a Porch Potty over other competitors. Drainage - No other product has both drain options (indoor catch basin AND extended drain hose). The gravity fed drain hose on the Porch Potty allows you to direct the liquid to a nearby patio drain, gutter, or flower bed if you like. You can pour lots of water over the grass if you want without worrying about it over-flowing the "small bin" that other potty boxes have. A great way to keep the porch potty clean, just like your toilet works. Automated - It waters itself and drains itself. No other product can do that. This is a patent pending feature that only the Porch Potty has.

Q: Do I need a hose nearby to water the grass?

Not really. The Porch Potty Premium has a hose connection. This is an added feature to make watering/rinsing your grass completely mindless. If you don't have a garden hose nearby, we suggest you purchase the Porch Potty Standard and water it with a gallon of water once a day. Watering it less frequently can decrease the life of the grass due to odor.

Q: Can I buy my own sod?

Sod is available in almost every town, such as Home Depot, or neighborhood nurseries, however we recommend using our Training Sod. All grass sod from your local store will have 1 inch of dirt along the bottom. Our Training Sod has no dirt which helps keep the drain hose clear of dirt and debris.

Q: How long will the grass stay alive?

We have tested many types of grass and conditions. The Training Sod is a soilless sod meant to act as a convenient means of providing real sod during the training period of 3-4 weeks. However, we have seen the grass remain healthy and green for up to 6 months, before urine burn sets in.

Q: How tall is the box? Can my little dog get on it?

The box is 6 inches tall. About the size of a stair in your home, or a street curb. If your dog can go up stairs or jump onto a curb while you walk her, she can get on the box without a problem.

Q: Can I switch from real grass to fake grass and visa versa?

Yes, simply place the synthetic grass on the drain pan instead of real grass. The grass pan is 2 inches deep, and drains through a single hole in the middle of the pan, and out the drain tube.

Q: I have a hose now, but may not have one later once I move. Can I switch it from a Porch Potty Premium to a Porch Potty Standard?

The Porch Potty Premium works great with or without a hose connected to it. If you don't use the sprinkler, just pour water over the Porch Potty as if it was a Porch Potty Standard. The sprinkler will still be there, but not operating.

Q: My dog is 80 pounds. Can the Porch Potty accommodate her? Would she be too big?

The Porch Potty has been tested to hold over 150 pounds. However, due to the size of the box (52" x 28"), we recommend using Porch Potty with dogs under 120 pounds. Anything over that would require a larger size. We offer two sizes (small and large). There are other companies that offer even larger sizes, but you might be surprised at the prices.

Q: Can I wash the synthetic grass in a washing machine or dryer?

We have tested this, and found it to be unnecessary. The agitation of the washer after 4 washes began to wear the rubber coating on the bottom. For cleaning, simply poor a few gallons of water over the synthetic grass periodically to flush out any urine residue down the built-in drain. Our synthetic grass is completely water proof and easy to clean.

Q: Can I cut the drain hose to any length?

Yes. Simply use scissors to cut the 14 foot drain hose to any length.

Q: Can I use it indoors?

We highly recommend using the Porch Potty outside, especially if you will be using real grass or the sprinkler system. If you want to use the Porch Potty Standard indoors, use the Catch Basin for catching water and urine during rinsing times.

Q: Can I use the Porch Potty in freezing temperatures?

The Porch Potty Standard can be used in below freezing temperatures without the drain freezing shut or causing any damage to the Porch Potty. The Porch Potty Premium however, will need to be detached from the garden hose during the extreme cold winter months. This is to prevent the water in the hose and sprinkler head from freezing, expanding, and potentially cracking the sprinkler body. The drain hose will have no problems draining though, so feel free to manually water the grass to rinse the synthetic grass. The water goes down the drain without freezing because it happens too quickly for the water to freeze.

Q: How come shipping costs are so high?

As much as we would like to have influence over the cost of shipping, we can't. We pass along exactly the same shipping costs that are charged to us - no more, no less.

The Porch Potty is 33 pounds. And, while we do receive many requests for us to cover shipping, like some other companies do on their product lines, we cannot. If we were shipping something smaller than 3 pounds, there may be a chance we could absorb some of those costs, but in this case we can't.
